Gamification
We design leaderboards, progress and gamified funnels with Yu-kai Chou’s Octalysis framework, so people have a real reason to come back and finish what they started.
Why do people come back?
Points and badges are easy to add and easy to ignore. What brings people back is a sense of progress, a place of their own and a little friendly competition. Yu-kai Chou’s Octalysis framework maps those motivations, and we use it to decide what to build before choosing any mechanic.
Rock N Roll Poker League is a free-to-play league in South Florida bars. Its old website listed times and venues, with no player history. We rebuilt it in .NET with player profiles, XP and live leaderboards, and turnout rose 50% within weeks of launch. Our founder plays poker too, and backed the project as a partner. The story starts in part one of our RnR series.

How we put it to work
-
Start with motivation
For RnR we focused on four Octalysis drives: accomplishment, ownership, social connection and curiosity. Only then did we choose rewards to match.
-
Leaderboards and XP that add up
Rankings that give regulars a challenge and newcomers a chance, and XP rules that still hold when players get creative.
-
Funnels that show progress
ShipYourCarNow’s quote funnel turns a long form into clear steps. Visible progress helps people finish, without pressure tricks.
FAQ
Gamification questions, answered
Often the useful parts aren’t games at all: visible progress, clear next steps and recognition. ShipYourCarNow ships cars, and a step-by-step quote flow works very well for them.
Usually because they reward nothing people care about. We start with what motivates your audience, then choose the mechanic. Here’s why badges alone rarely keep people.
It depends on what your platform records about each person. If it tracks activity, we can often build on it. If it doesn’t, as with RnR’s old website, a rebuild may make more sense.
